7 highlights from the SS19 shows.
Every year when September rolls around we get ready to see what designers have in store for their Spring collections. Once New York Fashion Week arrives, we are keeping up either through social media, live streams, or standing outside waiting to spot a celebrity in the latest trends. NYFW has come and gone, however, it was filled with some memorable moments -- models going into labor, surprise drag shows, and politics. Here's our list of the best 7 moments from New York Fashion Week 2018:
1. Model Slick Woods gives birth after walking the Savage x Fenty Lingerie Show
On September 13, 2018, Rihanna closed out New York Fashion Week the only way she could -- legendary. The Savage x Fenty lingerie show featured women of all races and body sizes. Even pregnant models walked the runway. Specifically, model Slick Woods walked the show in a black tong and black nipple covers only to find out she would go into labor hours after the show giving birth to a baby boy.
2. Opening Ceremony presents an epic drag show
In collaboration with Ru Paul's Drag Race, Opening Ceremony debuted its SS19 collection with a live drag show hosted by Sasha Valour. The show featured more than 40 drag queens and LGBTQ models and ended with a surprise performance by Christina Aguilera.
3. Rodarte Returns to NYFW with a Graveyard Scene
Rodarte had a two-year hiatus in Paris and made its return to runway at this year's NYFW. The show took place in a graveyard -- yes, a graveyard in the Lower East Side. This collection made the location choice beautiful. The Mulleavy sisters are known their moody and dark design so only they could make a runway show in a graveyard seem timeless.
4. Pyer Moss celebrates black culture with an iconic runway
Pyer Moss brought its SS19 collection to Weeksville, Brooklyn for a show that celebrated black culture. The choice of location, the Weeksville Heritage Center, was one of the country's first free black communities. The collection featured works by black artist Derrick Adams with T-shirts stating "Stop Calling 911 On The Culture." A gospel choir and all-black cast of models made the show even more iconic.
5. Ralph Lauren celebrates his 50th Anniversary with the biggest guests
Ralph Lauren celebrated his 50th Anniversary at the beautiful Bethesda Terrace in Central Park. The star-studded guests consisted of Oprah, Hilary Clinton, Kanye West, Blake Lively and many more. The show was an overall celebration of the designer's career featuring over 100+ runway looks including the Ralph Lauren Collection line and Polo Ralph Lauren.
6. Christian Siriano mixes politics with fashion
At Christian Siriano’s SS19 show, every seat was covered with a card reminding guests to not forget to vote for New York's Primary Election. The designer showed his support for Cynthia Nixon with models wearing "Vote for Cynthia" tees.
7. Sandy Liang takes it back to her roots
Sandy Liang showed her collection in her own home during NYFW. Guests came to see the designer's streetwear-inspired collection at Congee Village, a Lower East Side Cantonese restaurant located under Liang's apartment. The restaurant is owned and ran by Liang's father. "There is never one new inspiration per season, it's always just an ongoing influence of the neighborhood and my family, nostalgia and my childhood," Liang said during the presentation.
