Lana Del Rey Drops a 10-Minute Song and Announces New Album 'Norman Fucking Rockwell'
BY ISABELLE BEAUCHAMP
A year after her 2017 album Lust for Life, Lana Del Rey returns with two new enticing summer tracks and an album announcement.
"Oh God, miss you on my lips, it's me, your little Venice bitch,” Lana Del Rey purrs on her new 10-minute record, "Venice Bitch." The song, rich in synths and guitar riffs, was released alongside a dreamy music video featuring Del Rey driving through highways. "Venice Bitch," produced by Bleachers member Jack Antonoff, features cheeky, flirtatious lyrics like "my baby, crimson and clover” and "fresh out of fucks, forever."
"Venice Bitch" is orchestral and alluring while painting a golden atmosphere dripping in ice cream cones of passionate summer love. The beginning of the song is light and whimsical; Del Rey sings about how she and her lover are "American-made," accompanied by gentle guitar licks. Just when the second chorus sets in, however, the song drops into a darker, moodier tone with Del Rey amorously singing over electric guitar riffs and synths. The song is full of false outros and chorus variations, making this some of Del Rey's most experimental work yet (it's also her longest -- before "Venice Bitch," "Cruel World" from her 2014 record Ultraviolence held the record at seven minutes).
Lana Del Rey told Beats 1 about the single in an interview with Zane Lowe:
"I played it for my managers and I was like, 'Yeah, I think this is the single I want to put out.' And they were like, 'It's 10 minutes long. Are you kidding me? It's called 'Venice Bitch,' why do you do this to us? Can you make a three-minute normal pop song?' Del Rey told Lowe her response was: "Well, end of summer, some people just wanna drive around for 10 minutes and get lost in some electric guitar."
Along with the release of "Venice Bitch," Del Rey also announced her new album, Norman Fucking Rockwell, on the interview with Lowe. The album, which will feature this new track and last week's tender release, "Mariners Apartment Complex," is supposed to be released sometime in 2019 and currently has 11 tracks. On the show, Del Rey explains how the name Norman Fucking Rockwell came about:
Del Rey also stated that she hopes to release a new track sometime in October. In the meantime, we'll all be listening to "Venice Bitch" as the summer fades away.
